Learning to Read

Learning to read with ease requires simultaneously growing skills in decoding, comprehension, and fluency.  This is accomplished by utilizing a combination of PAF (an Orton Gillingham program for emergent readers), Wilson (a multi-sensory approach for reinforcing phonics patterns), and REWARDS (for middle and high schoolers who need practice in decoding and fluency). Students working to improve comprehension skills will learn to identify and analyze the literary elements of fiction, and to synthesize and evaluate evidence in nonfiction texts. Students may also study root words and etymology as they garner a stronger understanding of English vocabulary through the study of spelling patterns as they relate to phonology, morphology, and semantics.
